Gregory Bourdy leads the Iberdrola Open
French golfer Gregory Bourdy is leading the Iberdrola Open after posting a seven under par in the first round. The player matched the course record and has secured a one-shot lead at this European Tour event taking place in Mallorca, Spain. In second place
is English Danny Willet who posted a six under par.
"It's always great to hold a course record. It's very nice on Tour to get a score like this," said Bourdy after his round. "I made nine birdies, only two or three mistakes but it was a wonderful day.I had a difficult hole on seven, making a very good bogey,
and on 15 where I missed an easy shot - but the rest was magnificent. I played my best game ever."
Bourdy had a decent round and surely kept the crowd entertained. He started off on the tenth hole and pared it. Making a birdie on the eleventh hole, the player initiated the birdie spree. Posting another birdie on the fourteenth hole, the 29-year-old bogeyed
the fifteenth hole. Making back to back birdies from the 16th hole till 18th, the player really set the course on fire as he made the turn at 31.
Bourdy started off his last nine holes on agood note as he birdied the par four first. Making another birdie on the third hole, the player had built up a great momentum. Having won on the European Tour three times already, Bourdy made another birdie on
the sixth hole. His second bogey came on the seventh hole which he himself called a difficult hole. The player however, overcame by carding another birdie on the eighth hole.
Meanwhile, Danny Willet would have been tied for the lead had it not been for his sole bogey on the twelfth hole. The Englishman though, was happy with his overall performance. Willet has had some decent finishes in the previous tournaments but still hasn’t
attained his maiden tour victory. This start was a good sign for him and he is hoping to continue with the improved form.
