Ajax Amsterdam’s Gregory van der Wiel has revealed that his side’s ambition is to defend the title successfully in the upcoming season. The 23-year-old has joined the pre-season training camp and started to train with his teammates in Germany on Monday.
The Dutch International has been a part of the Amsterdammers squad since making his debut at De Grolsch Veste against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede in March 2007, after spending two-season with Ajax’s youth academy. The highly-rated defender has so far played well
over 100 matches and has found the back of the net on nine occasions.
The right-back played an important role in the Amsterdammers triumph in the 2010/11 season, when his side managed to win the Eredivisie title on the final day of the season by defeating their rivals FC Twente in front of their home crowd.
His impressive performances at the back did not go unnoticed, as Chelsea FC and Inter Milan remain interested in acquiring his services in the ongoing summer transfer market. However, the young defender has indicated his desire to prolong his stay at Amsterdam
Arena.
The Dutch International had his first training session with the club on Monday, July 11, and the defender eased his way through all the exercises. The right-back revealed that he regularly trained in his holidays to remain fit enough.
“I trained on my own during my holidays. I regularly went running and did stability training. I didn’t want to just let go. Now I can be reasonably fit with the rest of the group”, Van der Wiel said.
The youngster then went on to reveal that the acquisitions of Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Derk-Boerrigter-c10972 have certainly made his side much stronger than last season.
“With the newcomers, we are definitely a step ahead for the coming season compared to the championship season. We’ll be stronger as a team. Especially now that we’re with Frank de Boer from the beginning now, for the preparations. He’s going to make us all
better. Our aim for the new season is simple: become champions again”, the right-back concluded.
The 2011/12 campaign for Ajax looks a lot rosier and the Amsterdammers faithful would be hoping for their side to compete successfully in Netherlands as well as in Europe.
