The Ajax Amsterdam stopper was keen to impress at the European Championship that could garner him interest from the top European clubs, but the Dutchman failed to live up to his standards as one of the best defenders in
Europe.
Ajax Amsterdam defender, Gregory van der Wiel, has expressed frustration following a poor Euro 2012 campaign, which saw http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 crash out of the competition from the group stages.
The Dutch international, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2007, has been heavily linked with a move away from the Eredivisie giants before the start of the 2012/13 season.
Reports indicate that several top European clubs including the likes of Real Madrid, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Lille are taking keen interest in luring the 24-year-old full-back away from Amsterdam Arena this summer.
However, following his abysmal performances at Euro 2012 in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032, the highly-talented right-back has insisted that he failed to deliver his best throughout the competition.
“I have no definite news about Real Madrid. They could be looking for a right-back, but I have not played well enough to prove I can play there for them”, Van der Wiel was quoted as saying to Marca.com.
The Dutch stopper went on to confess that he can stage far better performance than he did at European Championship.
“I can do much better and that's frustrating for me. We'll see what happens in a few weeks and which clubs are interested, but for now I cannot be thinking about Real Madrid”, Van der Wiel concluded.
The Dutch international, who has thus far donned the jersey of the Amsterdam giants in well over 100 Eredivisie matches, has an ongoing contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the summer of 2013.
The Ajax management are keen to hold on to their prized asset, and would be offering the talented full-back an extension to his current contract in the coming weeks.
However, reports indicate that the Amsterdammers management would very well cash in on their prized asset if an offer in the region of 12 million Euros comes in this summer.
