The Ajax stopper looks back at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753’ disastrous Euro 2012 exit, and stressed that the Bayern Munich attacker should have tracked back all the time to help the team claim victories.
Ajax Amsterdam right-back, Gregory van der Wiel, has criticised http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032.
The highly-rated full-back, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2007, has revealed that the Bayern Munich winger was selfish most of the times on the pitch, and never really played for the team at European Championship.
The Oranje entered the competition in Poland and Ukraine as one of the favourites, but three defeats in a row against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 forced them out of the tournament from the group stages.
Van der Wiel, who has thus far represented Netherlands in 35 matches, has revealed that the former Real Madrid star should have tracked back a lot more to help his side.
“If you give Arjen the ball and he has two opponents in front of him, he'll still try and get past them. He's not the type of player to sacrifice himself for the wing-back and cut inside to create space for me, or tracks back to help me out when I'm dealing
with two opponents. I was the one sacrificing myself for Arjen, and that's not something I'm used to. It was a bit frustrating how things went”, the Dutch international was quoted as saying to the Dutch media.
Nonetheless, the talented right-back, who has thus far played over 100 Eredivisie matches while donning the jersey of Ajax, went on to admit that they both can play together for the Oranje.
“I know that we can play together and that he can be decisive for us. Things simply didn't work out for the entire team. It was completely different than at the World Cup”, Van der Wiel concluded.
Netherlands will return to action when they take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Turkey-c3026 on September 7.
