Gresley A4 Pacifics?

Were any of the Gresley A4 Pacifics regularly timetabled to run in and out of Hull? I know some of them appeared there on 'Specials' but did any of them venture off the ECML to Hull?

  1. I have never seen any phots of A4s on the line to Hull, nor would you expect this type of loco to take a portion of an express just to Doncaster.

By contrast, Leeds Central of fond memories seemed to exist with its A1 and A3s for Kings X trains with the ocasional A4. As Leeds was a more important service than Hull, sorry Humbersiders,  the fact that only a few A4s went on this service would suggest that even fewer were sent to Hull.

The best answer has already been given by our colleague from Doncaster,my comments merelty support his views.

  2. Possibly during BR years, but not timetabled - and probably only on van trains, and in emergencies.

Normally, they were too busy with Passenger trains on the main line to bother about going to other locations.

  3. To the best of my knowledge, the A4s were never booked onto regular timetabled Hull trains.

I was born and grew to in Doncaster, and although it is not impossible for it to have occurred, I have never seen any record of it.

I'm looking forward to the other answers on your question as I'm an ex-Railwayman, avid Railway enthusiast and "amateur Historian".

Edit. A down Hull train means that the locomotive brought the train from London KX, being replaced at Doncaster.

Edit 2. Hull was East Riding and for me always will be.
