Greta Arn overcomes Julia Cohen to enter main draw – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Qualifier’s top seed, Greta Arn, battled past the local wild card entrant, Julia Cohen, in a three set nail-biter at the BNP Paribas Open 2012, a major hard court tournament held in Indian Wells, United States. She formulated a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 victory over
the 22-year-old to book a spot in the main draw on Tuesday.
The world number 70 showed her top notch performance at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place from March 5th-18th. She produced a poor first serve share but broke her opponent’s serve seven times
to steal the spotlight in their first outing.
Arn went berserk in the opening set and stroke out the opening six games successively. The Hungarian swept aside both breakpoints she came across and capitalised on three out of seven break opportunities to pull out a bagel in the opening set.
Ranked 162nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Cohen turned the tides towards her favour and earned the coveted break in the opening game. In spite of losing her serve in the very next game, she converted another break chance to her advantage and put
her nose ahead again. The American then remained focused and broke Arn’s serve again in the seventh game, sealing the equaliser by winning six games to two.
The 32-year-old brought her experience into hand once more in the final set. She blasted powerful forehands from her arsenal of skills to reel off the opening four games in a row before gifting away her serve. Despite losing her edge in the ninth game, she
broke Cohen’s serve in the follow-up game and clinched the decider with a 6-4 score line.
The Hungarian tennis star spilled more double faults but impressively marked 28 out of 50 points on her first serve share. She then capped the match by clicking 90 points and cashed in seven out of 18 break chances.
Arn will next confront the Swedish ace, Johanna Larsson, in the opening round of the main draw.
Australian challenger, Casey Dellacqua, will join the Hungarian in the main draw. She eased past Japan’s Misaki Doi in straight sets to occupy this spot.
