Greta Arn topples Madison Keys in the qualifiers – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Qualifier’s top seed, Greta Arn, crippled the local wild card entrant, Madison Keys, with a breadstick at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over the 17-year-old to advance into the final round of the qualifying competition of this Premier Mandatory event taking place on the outdoor hard courts in Indian Wells, United States.
The Hungarian tennis star, Arn displayed top class performance to sweep aside Keys in their first meeting. After bagging this hour and 41-minute duel, Arn inched closer towards the $4,500,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
Arn, ranked 70th in the WTA Premier Rankings, stormed into the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and drew the first blood in the opening game. Despite losing her serve in the very next game, she broke Keys’ serve again in the third game and put her nose ahead again. However, the Hungarian was not consistent as she not only levelled the scores at 4-4 but also exchanged a serve break, eventually enforcing a tie-breaker. She edged past the American in it and registered a 7-6(4) score line.
The 32-year-old found her rhythm in the following set and held her opening serve without any difficulty. After the American held her serve in the second game, Arn unveiled her true colours and went on a five-game killing spree, eventually pulling out a breadstick.
Overall, the Hungarian outclassed her opponent in every department of tennis. She brought her experience into handy and produced a higher first serve share of 59 percent as opposed to Keys’ 50 percent. Arn also impressively availed 25 out of 41 points on it and availed five out of eight break chances.
Up next for Arn is another local competitor, Julia Cohen, who shocked the 21st seed, Eva Birnerova of Czech Republic, in straight sets to secure this position.
The world number 162 needed almost two hours to crush Birnerova with an exceptional 6-1, 7-5 score line. She capitalised fully on the several unforced errors and five double faults the Czech spilled. The American saved seven out of 10 breakpoints she faced and broke her rival’s serve six times.
