Greta Arn upsets Sara Errani to reach the quarter-finals at Monterrey
Hungarian Greta Arn rallied back to win against the 6th seeded Italian Sara Errani in three sets. World number 58, Arn advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2011 Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey on Wednesday.
The 31-years old Hungarian started this season in great shape as she won the title at Auckland against 2nd seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. She also reached the quarter-finals at Acapulco. In this tournament, she overpowered Czech Sandra Zhalavova
with a bagel in the first round.
World number 41, Errani lost to Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova in the final at Pattaya and reached the quarter-finals at Hobart. Despite exiting in the second round at Dubai, she dumped Swede Johanna Larson in the first round of this event.
After losing the first set, Arn bounced back for a convincing 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over the Italian. In the opening set, the Hungarian fired 4 aces and got a higher first serve percentage but the Italian won the set by breaking Arn’s serve twice.
In the following set, Arn broke Errani’s serve three times for an equaliser. The Italian converted two opportunities to her advantage but the one extra earned by Arn led her to win the set 7-5. Errani also had a much higher first serve percentage of 76 percent
as compared to Arn’s 51 percent, but she wasn’t able to hold the raging Hungarian back.
The Hungarian kept her winning momentum in the final set as well as she clinched the set spectacularly. Despite earning fewer first serves, she broke the Italian’s serve three times.
She will next be facing a tougher competitor: 2nd seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals who overwhelmed the Italian Melanie Oudin in three sets to get there.
"Melanie is a much more aggressive player than my opponent yesterday so I had to pay much more attention," Pavlyuchenkova said. "I played much better."
The Russian displayed an awe-inspiring game of tennis and was leading 6-2, 5-2. Later Oudin managed to hold Pavlyuchenkova back by taking the set to tiebreak. The 19-years-old Russian overpowered her in the tiebreaker to win the second set 7-6(6).
