Greyhound Racing: How to Read a Scorecard (Part 2)

This is a continuation of the previous article of the same name, discussing how to read a scorecard that is provided at Greyhound races. For an example of a scorecard, follow this
http://www.greyhound-racing-student.co.uk/_common/images/greyhounds.gif.
Next up is “By” which simply refers to how much the particular dog won by or lost by. The “Winner/2nd” column tells the name of the runner up if the Greyhound won the race, or the winner of the race if the dog didn’t win. The “Handicap/Venue”
listing states whether the winner was handicapped or the handicap of the second, whatever the case. If it states the name of a racetrack, it means that the Greyhound previously raced at a different track, and if it is blank then it raced at the current venue.
The “Remarks” lists any comments about the runner during the race to tell whether the Greyhound had a clear run or ran into trouble. The remarks listed on the scorecard are abbreviations and are explained elsewhere on the program. Since a Greyhound race
usually takes place over four laps, the total time finished in is listed under “WinTm.”
The “Going” column refers to the condition of the track. If there is an “N” it means that there were normal conditions. A “+” denotes an increase in time, usually due to a hard, dry track, while  a “-” means that the Greyhound ran slower, usually as a result
of heavy rain. The number listed after the + or – refers to how much faster or slower the dog ran, in hundredths of a second.
The Greyhounds weight is listed under “Kilos” while the “SP/T” refers to the price returned by the starting price compiler after each race. The “Class” listing states the class of the dog, such as A1, A2, and so on. The lower the number, the better the class.
Different tracks use different prefixes, but a common one used is “OR” meaning open race.
Last but not least on the scorecard is the calculated time or “CalcTm,” which is the finishing time plus the Going. This calculation does not take into account any trouble during the race.
So just to sum things up, Dan’s Daydream will be running from Trap 1. His last race was on March 28th for a distance of 660 meters, during which he ran from Trap 1. He averaged 17.34 seconds per lap and was in fifth place for around the first
and second bend, third place around the third bend, and second place around the fourth bend, finishing first by a head. Clune Becky came in second place and Dan’s Daydream ran crowded during the race. He finished in a total of 41.60 seconds under normal conditions.
He weighs 26.4 kilograms and paid out 9/4. It was an open race, with a calculated time of 41.60.
So now that you know how to bet on a Greyhound race as well as how to read a scorecard, there is only one thing left to do. Get out there, start betting, and win some money!
