I'm going to be travelling in a greyhound from chicago to des moines. I'll be buying my ticket from the station itself. This is an overnight bus.

Do I have to be worried about anything in particular?

As I'm going to be a first time greyhound-traveler... can you please tell me what kind of people i might face during the journey.

I'm an 18yr old guy returning to college.

  1. Well, i recently had a disastrous trip on Greyhound...not because of the passengers, they were fine.  The bus was ancient, dirty and falling apart.  There were long delays, rude driver, and they lost my luggage and never found it.  So...for my return trip I looked on Craig'slist and also posted a message there.  I got a ride with a very nice college student who even gave me references.   It was far more comfortable...and my luggage ( all new stuff of course) was not lost!  I would recommend you look on Craigslist under ridefiner or on the new ridefinder service called Zimride.

  2. ON my most recent trip through Iowa I left Chicago at about 10 pm They had a rest Meal stop on I-80. The only drawback wa our arrival time into Des Moines 415 am.

  3. I found trailways has direct service from chicago to des mones

    (no transfers)

and same day service (no over nighting on the bus

    https://www.burlingtontrailways.com/sche...

you dept Chicago at  7;00am arr Des Mones at 6:10pm that same eveing

    cost is 48.00 one way

(trailways is a better company then Greyhound)

and even cheaper greyhound will charge Refundable Fare     $53.50

also I highly suggest you adviod greyhound they have a lot of problems lately (with bus drivers leaving passeners stranded, or miss connections, or the driver gets lost or doesnt know how to find the next station or even speak engish

  4. You may want to pack some jerky/water/sandwiches or something to eat, and of course something to read.   Otherwise you'll be eating at vending machines where the bus stops.  May want to have some change and single dollars if you want to buy something.  NOt the best place to break 20s.  Bus travel is slow, but sometimes a necessity.  Most people leave you alone, try not to sit by someone who is chatty.  The usual passengers are not the same as you see at the airport.  You'll run into more issues with the greasy characters that hang out at the bus station.
