Grid of 12 women’s teams finalised for the 2012 London Olympic Games – Volleyball news
Following the successful completion of 2012 FIVB Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, the grid of 12 teams finalised for the upcoming Summer Olympics in London.
The Olympic qualification process for women’s volleyball started off in 2010 and finally completed its run in 2012, in about three years’ time. The FIVB Women’s World Olympic Qualifiers, which continued from May 23-27, served as the last leg in the whole
process.
According to the set formula of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and International Olympic Committee (IOC), the 2012 FIVB World Qualification Tournament ran in association with the Asian Qualifiers. A total of four slots were empty, which have
been now captured by Russia, South Korea, Serbia, and Japan.
Russia qualified for Olympics with a wonderful 7-0 record at the 2012 Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament. South Korea and Serbia finished second and third in the competition, and clawed their way to the Olympic Games. Furthermore, Japan topped
the AVC Qualification Tournament and secured a trip to Horse Guards Parade in London.
The 2012 FIVB Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament became the only major event that helped four teams to clinch Olympic berths. Previously, the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Cup created the chance for three teams to claim Olympic Tickets. Italy, United
States, and China emerged as top-three teams of the competition and filled in the first three Olympic spots, last year.
Later on, the continental qualification phase started out and Algeria claimed the Olympic ticket via 2012 African Qualification Tournament. Likewise, Dominican Republic proved its endeavours at the North American Qualification Tournament and settled for
Olympic berth. European Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Turkey, where the hosts benefitted from familiar conditions and grabbed top slot.
World Champions Brazil qualified for the Olympic Games through South American Qualification Tournament.
