Grigor Dimitrov battles past Donald Young into the third round – Winston-Salem Open 2011
Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 52nd in the world, came back after losing a one-sided second set to defeat world number 85 Donald Young of USA in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(2) in the second round at the Winston-Salem
Open in North Carolina, USA on Tuesday. The match lasted for two hours and three minutes.
Dimitrov and the American held their serve in the first four games to tie the score at 2-2. The Bulgarian broke Young in the fifth game and won his next service game to go ahead 4-2. Dimitrov served out the set in the tenth game,
sealing it 6-4.
The Bulgarian kept his first serve percentage at 67 percent, firing four aces and hitting a single double fault in the first set. The right-handed sealed seventeen of the 22 points on the first serve and six of the eleven points
on the second serve in the opening set. Dimitrov also returned better than his opponent as he won eight of the 24 first return points compared to just five of the 22 by the American in the first set.
The six feet and two inches tall carried the winning momentum into the second set and claimed lead straightaway, breaking Young in the first game to go up 1-0 but he lost his serve in the next game to equalise the score at 1-1.
Dimitrov managed to win just one of the next six games after that, getting broken in the fourth and eighth game to drop the set 2-6.
Young hit 67 percent of the first serves and clinched twelve of the fourteen points on them in the second set. In comparison, Dimitrov served poorly as he committed five double faults and lost seven of the nine second service points
in the second set.
In the third set, Young broke the Bulgarian in the fourth game to race to a 3-1 lead. Dimitrov broke back immediately and won his next service game to level the score at 3-3. The Bulgarian broke Young again in the ninth game to
take a 5-4 lead but could not serve out the set in the tenth game, squaring off the score at 5-5. Dimitrov and his opponent won their next two service games to take the score to 6-6, forcing a tie-break. The Bulgarian thrashed the left-handed in the tie-break,
losing just two points and bagging it 7-2.
Dimitrov will face third seed Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in the round of 16. The Ukrainian beat Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
