Grigor Dimitrov beats Albert Ramos in the quarter-finals – SkiStar Swedish Open 2012
Seeded sixth in the draw, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov reached his second semi-final in this season by toppling the third seed, Albert Ramos of Spain, in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-3 at the last-eight stage of the SkiStar Swedish Open
in Bastad, Sweden on Friday. Dimitrov took one hour and 48 minutes to oust his Spanish opponent from the competition.
In the first set, both players held their serve in the opening four games to level the score at 2-2. Ramos was first to take lead, as he snatched a break in the fifth to move ahead 3-2 but Dimitrov did not take much time to square
off the score at 3-3. The next five games went with serve to take the proceedings to 5-5. Ramos went up once again by striking in the 11th but failed to capitalise on it, losing his following serve to level the score at 6-6 and force a tie-breaker.
Dimitrov played almost error free afterwards, as he won first six points to take a 6-0 lead. Ramos managed to win point but could not do anything more, losing it 6-7(1).
Dimitrov smacked one ace but also committed the equal number of double fault in the first set. The Paris, France resident put in 72 percent of the first serves and sealed 17 of the 31 points on them. The 21-year-old responded quite
well to his rival’s second deliveries, claiming 12 of the 17 points on them.
The Bulgarian rising star and his more experienced opponent started the second set by winning their serve in the opening two games to even it out at 1-1. Dimitrov played some mind blowing tennis in the following two, as he did
allow his opponent to win even a single point, grabbing eight in a row to capture a 3-1 lead. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, the Bulgarian was unable to have success and went down 3-6.
Dimitrov hit a single ace and did not concede any double fault this time. The 6ft 2in tall had a below par first serve percentage of 55 and won just seven of the 12 points on them. In comparison, his performance on the second ones
was stunningly good, as he pocketed nine of the 10 points. The right-hander did face any break point and converted two of the five he received in the second set.
The Bulgarian contestant is slated to lock horns with the top seed, David Ferrer, in the semi-finals.
