Grigor Dimitrov breezes past Tommy Haas in opening match – Farmers Classic 2011
In the last match of Tuesday at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, a US Open series ATP tournament, seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov easily displaced wild card entrant Tommy Haas in their opening match. Dimitrov secured an elegantly
contrived win 6-3, 6-2 in just about one hour and seven minutes. He now securely moves on to the second round of the tournament.
The former world No. 2, German Haas is currently ranked at 579 on the rankings chart and came into the tournament with a win-loss mark of 1-5.He’s been playing at a slow pace and has won only a single opening round match against
compatriot Michael Berrer in Newport fro amongst the 5 tournaments he has played in. The victor, Bulgaria’s Dimitrov is currently placed at No. 57 but has had a miserable year so far. He came in with an 8-15 win-loss mark and has rarely managed to move past
the second round in most of the ATP tour tournaments he has participated in. An exception was at Eastbourne in June, where Dimitrov reached the quarter finals before bowing out to Janko Tipsarevic.
Crowds at the Straus Stadium witnessed a frenzied exchange of breakpoints between the two players, with 10 breakpoints registered in the complete match. Haas opened the first set and the set calmly proceeded to 1-1. However from
the 3rd game onwards Dimitrov broke serve a staggering four times while Haas fought back by securing 2 of his own. The thrilling set eventually closed at 6-3 in Dimitrov’s favour. The first set saw both the players serving almost equally but Dimitrov
won 10 points off his 13 serves, four more than his opponent.
The second set saw Dimitrov serving the opening game and he quickly established a lead by breaking Haas in the second game of the set and secured a lead 3-0.Haas served at 55%, higher than his opponent’s 43% but won only 8 points
from his 17 serves. Dimitrov on the contrary amassed 90% of his first serve points, leaving Haas crippled. The set finished at 6-2 with Dimitrov securing two well timed serve breaks against Haas’ one in the last three games.
Dimitrov’s second round match at the Farmers Classic is scheduled against Alex Bogomolov Jr. Bogomolov won his opening round match against qualifier Greg Jones in three sets earlier Tuesday.
