Grigor Dimitrov bulldozes Frederico Gil in the round of 16 – SkiStar Swedish Open 2012
World number 69, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, moved to the last eight, after downing Portugal’s Frederico Gil in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the SkiStar Swedish Open on Bastad, Sweden on Thursday. The Bulgarian
took just an hour and 21 minutes to beat Frederico in an easy match.
Dimitrov and Gil held their serve in the opening three games of the match to take the score to 3-2 in the former’s favour. The Bulgarian snatched a break in the sixth to move ahead 4-2 but his opponent pulled it back immediately,
reducing the trail to 3-4. Though, Frederico’s effort got wasted, as he lost the following two and went down 3-6.
The Bulgarian contestant fired two aces and did not commit any double fault, putting in 59 percent of the first serves and claiming 13 of the 19 points on them. The right-hander gave a good performance on the Portuguese’s deliveries,
as he bagged eight of the 15 first and three of the six second reply points. The 21-year-old converted two of the three break points he received and saved three of the four he faced in the opener.
Gil drew the first blood in the second set, as he captured first two games to move ahead 2-0. However, Dimitrov bounced back in style, taking a short time to level the proceedings at 2-2. The Bulgarian struck again in the third
and consolidated on it to take a 4-2 lead. Gil maintained his advantage till the end and closed it 6-4.
The Paris, France resident pounded three aces and 65 percent of the first deliveries on Gil, converting 12 of the 17 of them into points. The 6ft 2in tall gave a solid performance on the second serves and returns, sealing six of
the nine and eight of the 15 points on them respectively. The Haskovo, Bulgaria born failed to put away the only break threat he came across but balanced that by utilising five of the seven he created in the second set.
Dimitrov is drawn to play the third seed, Albert Ramos of Spain, in the quarter-finals.
