Grigor Dimitrov downs Andreas Beck in the opening round of BMW Open
Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 69th in the world, cruised past world number 110 Andreas Beck of Germany in straight sets in the first round at the BMW Open in Munich on Sunday. Dimitrov dropped just five games in
the entire match, winning a one-sided contest 6-1, 6-4 in just one hour and four minutes.
The 19-year-old broke his opponent in the second game of the opening set and held his serve in the next game to race to a 3-0 lead. Beck held his serve in the fourth game to reduce Dimitrov’s lead to 3-1. However, the Bulgarian
won three straight games, breaking the German in the sixth game and winning the opening set 6-1.
Dimitrov fired five aces and committed a single double fault in the first set. The Bulgarian hit 67 percent of the first serves, winning a whopping 92 percent of the points on them in the opening set. On the other hand, Beck served
poorly as he delivered just 40 percent of the first serves and managed to win only 33 percent of the points on them. The German could save just one of the three break points he faced in the first set.
Beck and Dimitrov held their serve in the first six games of the second set to level the score at 3-3. Dimitrov broke the German in the seventh game and held his next service game, taking a 5-3 lead. Beck held his serve in the
ninth game to take the score to 5-4. However, the German failed to break his opponent in the next game, losing the second set 4-6.
Dimitrov delivered a couple of aces and did not commit any double fault in the second set. The Bulgarian kept his first serve percentage at 74 percent and converted 80 percent of his first serves into points in the second set.
In comparison, Beck hit 75 percent of the first serves, winning 67 percent of the points on them. Dimitrov converted one of the five break points he created in the second set.
Talking to the reporters after the match, the Bulgarian said, "I love playing on Sundays. It’s a great atmosphere here; a lot of people were watching and the court was just great.”
Dimitrov added, "I felt quite confident on the court; it was good to go through. I just looked to stay positive on the court, stay calm and just do the best I could. I was happy today with my serve; I was hitting the ball OK. It
was a good match and great for the audience on Sunday."
Dimitrov will play either Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus or Julien Benneteau of France in the second round.
