Grigor Dimitrov ousts Simone Bolelli in round of 16 – PTT Thailand Open 2011
World number 76, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, registered a convincing victory against the Italian qualifier, Simone Bolelli, in the second round of the PTT Thailand Open on Thursday afternoon.
The unseeded Bulgarian took one hour and thirty nine minutes to wrap up his straight sets victory at 7-6(8), 6-1, to move into the final eight of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand, with Dimitrov displaying his brilliant tennis skills to outplay Bolelli from the competition. It was Dimitrov’s 15th victory
in the current ATP season and the first one against Bolelli in singles encounters.
Dimitrov belted 11 thudding aces in the matchup and dropped just four points on his serve, clinching 29 out of 33 first serve points to come out as the winner. Bolelli bettered him with 34 out of 62 first serve points in the matchup
but utterly failed to register a single break point in the entire contest to finish on the losing side in the end.
The Italian qualifier was off to a good start in the opener, holding his serve throughout the set to give some tough time to his opponent. No serve breaks were seen in the opening set of the match, with scored moving on neck-to-neck.
A tie breaker came into play when the scores were dead locked at 6-6 and both men exchanged a number of winners to take the first set. Dimitrov took the advantage of a mini-break in the decider to close out the opening set at 7-(8), to get one up in the contest.
The following set was an all-Bulgarian show, with Dimitrov dominating every minute of play. The Bulgarian nailed three crushing serve breaks in the set to rocket away to victory at 6-1, earning a place in the quarterfinals of the
tournament in style.
A much harder task waits for Dimitrov in the next round, as he will go one-on-one against the world number four, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, for a place in the semis of the PTT Thailand Open on Friday. Being the top seed
in the tournament, Murray got a bye to play directly in the second round and outclassed the unseeded German, Michael Berrer, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to force his way to the quarterfinal assertively.
