Grigor Dimitrov overcomes Dustin Brown in the second round – Credit Agricole Suisse Open 2012
World number 61, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, continued to make progress in the event, as he battled past Germany’s 138th ranked player, Dustin Brown, in three sets 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2 into the quarter-finals of the Credit
Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad on Thursday. The Bulgarian won the contest after a fight of one hour and 34 minutes.
Dimitrov and Brown served extremely well in the first set, as they did not lose any of the games and levelled the scores at 6-6 to force a tie-breaker. They went at par till 2-2 but then the Bulgarian put on a brilliant show, as
he snatched five of the following six points to seal it 7-6(3).
The 21-year-old pounded four aces and committed one double fault, putting in 72 percent of the first deliveries. The Haskovo, Bulgaria resident had an extra ordinary conversion rate on the first serves, as he bagged 28 of the 33
points on them but he gave a poor performance on the second ones, losing eight of the 13.
Brown started the second set by holding his opening serve to go up 1-0. Both players held their serve in the subsequent six to take the score to 4-3 in favour of the German player. Brown, finally, succeeded in claiming a breakthrough
in the eighth and made the most of it to triumph 6-3.
The German contender hit two aces and 50 percent of the first serves in the second set, sealing 13 of the 16 points on them. The 27-year-old evaded the only break threat he came across and availed the one chance he received.
Brown could not carry the winning momentum into final set, as he lost opening three games to go down 0-3. Serving to stay in contention at 2-5, the German was unable to hold it and lost it 2-6.
Dimitrov drastically improve his serve, winning most of the points on them in the decider. He also did a good job on the second returns, clinching five of the seven points.
The Bulgarian said, talking to the reporters after the match, “It was a funny match. He is a very tricky player. It was a great win for me. Conditions were tough and everything went in a smooth way. I am starting to feel I am playing
well on all surfaces now. It’s coming together.”
Dimitrov will face the world number 80, Lukasz Kubot of Poland, in the quarters.
