Grigor Dimitrov slays Donald Young in opening round – French Open 2012
Bulgarian ace, Grigor Dimitrov, devastated the American youngster, Donald Young, with double breadsticks at the Roland Garros 2012 on Tuesday. He formulated a 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-1 success against the 22-year-old to secure a spot in
the round of 64 at this major clay court tournament taking place in France.
Dimitrov showed super agility and skills to outgun the world number 51 in their third tour-level meeting. After pocketing this match, the Bulgarian not only took revenge for his loss at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships earlier
this circuit but also took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 2-1 against Young but also progressed into the second round.
The 21-year-old made a muscular start at the Court number six and drew the first blood in the seventh game to put his nose ahead for the first time in the match. Apart from losing his edge in the 10th game, Dimitrov
not only dragged the set to the tie-breaker but cruised to a 5-1 lead in it before sealing the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
Ranked 87th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Dimitrov unleashed his true colours after the opening set. He went on a five-game tear before the left-handed American could hold on. The Bulgarian then
held his serve once more and clinched the set with an assuring 6-1 score line.
The in-form Bulgarian maintained his intensity in the third set and earned the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. After the American came on the score sheet in the third game, Dimitrov stroke out the last
four games successively and clicked the set by winning six games to one.
Overall, the Bulgarian manifested a slightly lower first serve share of 60 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 63 per cent but spectacularly smashed 13 aces to prevail. He also impressively availed 44 out of 54 points on his first
serve share and finished the deal with 103 points.
Dimitrov will next confront the 17th seed, Richard Gasquet, who has the backing of the crowd. The seeded French triumphed over the Estonian qualifier, Jurgen Zopp, in straight sets to set up this meeting.
