Grigor Dimitrov stuns Janko Tipsarevic to enter quarters – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
Bulgarian star, Grigor Dimitrov, surprised everyone after upsetting the eighth seed, Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia, with a breadstick at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory against the Serbian number two to
power into the third round at this clay court tournament held in Monte Carlo, France.
The Bulgarian underdog unleashed his skills and abilities, eventually recording a brilliant victory at the Monte Carlo Country Club in one hour and 34 minutes. As a result, he grabbed his first victory over Tipsarevic in their fourth encounter and inched
closer towards the prize money.
The 21-year-old jubilantly stated in a post match press conference:
"I was just trying to hang into the match. It's never easy playing against Janko. Today was one of these days I was really looking forward to coming out on court and actually having a lot of fun, just trying to play good tennis in a way. I fought till the
last point in the first set. I gave an extra edge as the match went on. I was very happy with the performance today."
Dimitrov made a dismal entry into this match. He suffered the first blow in the opening game and fell at 0-2. The Bulgarian stayed calm and eventually recovered in the 10th game. The set went to a tie-breaker where Dimitrov jumped to a 4-1 lead
before carving out a 7-6(3) victory.
Ranked 34th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Dimitrov went berserk in the proceeding set. After Tipsarevic held his serve in the opening game, the Bulgarian unleashed flurry of groundstrokes. He eventually sealed the set with a
breadstick.
Overall, Dimitrov outclassed the seed completely. He fired seven aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 54 per cent as compared to his rival’s 51 per cent. The Bulgarian also impressively marked 23 out of 27 points on it and ended the battle with
72 points.
Next in queue for Dimitrov is the German challenger, Florian Mayer, who made an epic comeback from a set down to overpower Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut. He recorded a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory against the Spaniard.
