Question:

Grilled cheese, without the cheese?

I was wondering if there would be an acceptable substitute for cheese in the same manner of which you'd make a grilled cheese sandwich? This is just a question that's been in my head for a while and I'd like to change things up with cooking.

  1. like the other answerer said, you can grill pretty much any sandwich in the same manner as you make a grilled cheese. however, to get the bread to "stick" together like in a grilled cheese, you'd have to use something meltable/spreadable, like hummus, peanut butter, etc. i think i personally prefer the old-fashioned grilled cheese (especially with a few slices of bacon & tomato!) - but a grilled pb & j is actually surprisingly good! :-)

  2. pb and j

  3. If you won't put cheese in it, it won'tbe grilled cheese anymore, it would be just grilled sandwich. However you cant put anything if you wanted a grilled sandwich. If you like turkey, ham, bacon, tomatoes. There's a lot of great ingredients. I say put some cheese in it, and everything else you want.

  4. i just something about soy cheese... don't know what it is or if it melts but maybe you can look into that

  5. Peanut butter with either jelly or mashed bananas is excellent prepared in the same manner as a grilled cheese sandwich. I mix the peanut butter and the jelly or mashed bananas together before I spread it on the bread and it seems to help the sandwich stick together better.

  6. You can put almost anything in the middle to grill it: ham, pickles, tomatoes, mustard, etc.

I love grilled ham & cheese sandwiches :)

  7. Try this one!

    Elvis Presley's Grilled Peanut Butter

    and Banana Sandwich

    2 slices of white bread

2 tablespoons of smooth peanut butter

    1 small ripe banana mashed

    2 tablespoons butter

Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and the mashed banana on the other. Press the slices gently together. Melt the butter (or to be truly Elvis-like, melt bacon fat!), over low heat in a small frying pan. Place the sandwich in the pan and fry until golden brown on both sides. Eat it with a glass of buttermilk.

  8. You can put anything in a sandwhich, but if it hasn't got melted cheese in it then it's not a grilled cheese sandwhich. I don't know an alternative for that.
