  1. i use cheddar and swiss,,,,  and i will slice a tomato thin and add it,,, occassionally bacon or canadian ham

i use mayo instead of butter on my bread it makes it more crisp never soggy

  2. You can try adding some dill (fresh or dried) to your original recipe.

You can also try sprinkling your favorite brand of hot sauce on it before or after cooking.

Substitute smoked or aged cheeses for the standard ones.

If you really want to be adventurous, try adding a third type of cheese.  Hopefully you can locate one that would be complementary to the other two that you use.

Try a thick, crusty slice of French or Italian style bread instead of the traditional white bread.  If you want to, you might try something else like a sourdough bread, but I would think that the tastes of many other breads might clash with standard idea of the grilled cheese sandwich.

I have heard and read about variations that include adding a tomato to grilled cheese.  This might work to complement the tomato soup.

I don’t eat the standard American grilled cheese, but I have had the French croque-monsieur a number of times.  It’s basically a grilled cheese sandwich that has had ham added.  The additional ingredient gives you a number of added variations to try.

  3. I'd use cheddar and mozzarella with smoked ham and sliced tomatoes =]

  4. I like sliced dill pickles on my grilled cheese, and often use two cheeses.  I usually use mild cheeses so one doesn't overpower the other.

  5. I might add a little curry powder and basil to the soup. Or cumin and thyme.

American cheese IS boring. I'd use pepper jack and, manchego and/or smoked gouda!

    .

  6. one cheddar, one american...I always butter the bread, instead of putting the butter in the pan...comes out alot better.

  7. I use Pumpernickel Bread with Cheddar and Provolone Cheese. It is tantilizing.

    REcipe:

    2 slices pumpernickel bread

    2-4 Tbsp butter (spreadable)

    2 slices Cheddar cheese

    2 slices provoone cheese.

If using an electric skillet, heat to 350. (If Gas Burner, med.) Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Put one slice (butter side down) onto pan. Alternate cheese slices. When Cheese has started to melt place second slice of bread on top, and turn over. HEat until cheese is melted and bread is toasted. Enjoy!

  8. Use sourdough bread, 2 slices of cheddar, and thinly sliced granny smith apples. It sounds weird but taste yummy.

  9. Use soft butter on the bread.  As for cheese, one cheddar and one swiss.   I personally like pickles cooked in the sandwich for a tangy crunch. But that is purely optional as well.

  10. butter.

  11. I use munster or cheddar with tomato and bacon on texas toast, grilled till its brown and crispy

  12. well I'm 11 so i dint cook but my dad puts mozzarella and he puts the butter on them as hes cooking the bread then he puts mayo on it and chopped up onions in the cheese.its really really good.

  13. provolone..... avocado dip or pieces.....guacamoly..or .butter.. salsa.. after I drained it little

  14. Pepperjack, heh.  I like a little bit of spice.

Cheddar and mozzarella -- then it's kind of like a grilled cheese pizza.  You could add meat to it as well.

  15. I guess it depends on what kind of flavors you like. We sometimes make it with fresh mozzerella, cream havarti (sliced very thin), fresh basil and thinly sliced tomato. If you are eating it with the soup you may want to leave off the tomato.

  16. let the second cheese be red leister, its really nice.

  17. buttered sour dough bread, pepper jack cheese and fresh salsa

  18. How about swiss or havarti?? An herbed cheese would be really good. Is there really anything better than grilled cheese and tomato soup? I doubt it =)

  19. I love swiss and a pineapple ring and a couple slices of canadian bacon...sort of like a hawaiian grilled cheese, or even havarti with the pineapple and can. bac. is delicious.  Sorry, I'm not a huge fan of cheddar

  20. Munster cheese and a little cheddar with sliced avocado and sprinkled with a bit of garlic powder and grilled on challah bread slices.  Outer sides of bread of course smeared with butter.
