I do chicken in all sorts of ways, but tonight I'm making it into a salad and I would like to know which spices to use that won't mess up the flavor of my salad (using ranch dressing)

The spices I have on hand are : salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, meat tenderizer, lemon pepper, paprika, all spice, Cinnamon, oregano, basil and bay leaves. (don't have any marinades and not much time)

What should I put on the grilled chicken to make it taste good and not throw off the salad?

  1. Ok, you listed all the spices, etc that you have. Do you have some Italian salad dressing? That is the best marinade for grilled chicken. It doesn't over power the chicken and if grilled correctly the chicken is moist and tender with just a hint of the Italian seasoning. I often grill my chicken this way for the reason that my partner likes the chicken on a green salad to take for lunch. Marinade the chicken for about an hour in the Italian dressing. Place on grill above a pan of water with the heat to each side of the pan.  Close the grill. Cook just long enough for the chicken to be very well done. The chicken will have a nice glaze to it.

Sounds like canola and garlic would work great but just remember to cook the chicken indirectly.

  2. just add some ground pepper  all the rest of those spices are to strong and will dominate the dish just add a little pepper salt will ruin the chicken flavor powders will dry up the chicken and cinnamon wouldn't taste good on chicken and paprika is more for color than flavor. lemon pepper is alright if you want the chicken to have a lemony taste to it, basil and bay leaves aren't right either they will just take away from the dish and so will oregano so stick with the peppers is my final conclusion and most grilled chicken salads don't really have spices besides pepper sometimes

  3. Before grilling the chicken I would mix some garlic powder, pepper and basil in a little oil and coat the chicken and baste more on as it grills.  Ranch dressing has a lot of flavor on it's own and I think the other seasonings would clash.  Just my opinion.  I also would not grill the chicken with any salt on it or just very little as ranch dressing is pretty salty as it is.  I'd just keep it simple.

  4. Since it's summer, I'd go with the lemon pepper:

You can segue the flavor with a lemon based vinaigrette, which would be great with the salad.....That way, the flavors would not be 'fighting' each other....Enjoy!!!

  5. marinate chicken in olive oil, salt pepper garlic powder and crushed fresh garlic if you have any and a very little amount of oregano

i worked in salad cafe and thats how we made or famous grilled chicken for salads and sandwiches

  6. Keep it simple.... salt, pepper and garlic powder.
