How to make retainer not make my teeth hurt. I found a old retainer i used a few times, years ago when i got my braces off. Well it still fits my teeth and they are straight but it makes my teeth feel like h311. I just recently noticed i clinch my teeth together all day and night and i also grind..... i figured the retainer would help me with that but it makes my teeth hurt so i want to hold my teeth togeher. I have both a top and bottom retainer for my teeth and it was costum made but they both hurt my teeth. Is there anything that i can do to make them fit better or make myself stop clinching teeth and grinding.....

  1. its all normal. i'm 19 with the same problem.

wearing a retainer wont stop grinding or clenching or teeth, whatever you do to it.

You will need what is called a 'splint' its like a mouthguard but much stronger! you need to go to the dentist for this.

The splint is worn at night, as people grind and clench more at this time. It prevents grinding and clencing on your teeth and reduces the aches and pains of a saw jaw.

As for the clicking, this can be normal but it can become painful and your jaw can lock. go to the dentist and they can help you and refer you to a TMJ specialist.

Grinding and clenching can be caused by stress, but people can grind or clench without realising.

If running gets rid of your stress, thats great but it may not relieve your grinding and clenching.

  2. grinding and clenching your teeth is most commonly related to a drug addiction, with speed.

  3. I don't think the retainer or the anxiety med will help with the teeth grinding. The teeth grinding is MOST likely due to TMJ problems. You would have to go to a chiropractor to get that fixed.
