Grinding Noise on Gear k**b?

Hi,

I drive a 1998 Ford Escort GhiaX 1.8i Manual

And when the car is in neutral and the engine is on i will move the gear k**b left to right and i can hear a loud grinding noise, sounds like grinding rust. Is this something to worry about since its on the gear k**b?
