Grinding in 3rd gear??????????????????

ok so i noticed today while shifting into 3rd on my 2004 toyota celica with a manual transmission that is makes a loud grinding noise and is hard to get in 3rd.. it only does it in 3rd and just all of a sudden started.. i have already replaced the clutch and that didnt help at all.. what could be wrong?

  1. Hi,

    It sounds to me like the syncro has gone in 3rd. This is a very common problem in many cars as 3rd gear is used to much. However if you time the shift right then it shouldn't be to bad. Really if your a good enough driver you shouldn't need to use the whole clutch anyway.

    BTW, how many km has the car done? Do you grind the gears much?

  3. Check and change the oil in your manual transmission. Does your clutch engage/disengage at or near the top of the clutch pedal? If so your clutch may be causing the problem. Needs adjusting, hydraulics are leaking ect.

  4. Check the fluid first...that is cheap.

    3rd gear syncro. Syncros are not needed just make it easier. Live with it or fix it if you want.

  5. syncronizer, take it to a trans. shop
