Groin injury: Washington Capitals’ goaltender Tomas Vokoun rues missing playoffs-NHL News
Washington Capitals’ goaltender, Tomas Vokoun, is not too hopeful about his recovery from a groin injury, which he describes to be a “pretty severe tear”, and his return to rejoin the squad during the ongoing playoffs phase.
Vokoun has not played a game or practised since aggravating his groin muscle injury on March 29, 2012. He took part in the team’s training grill, receiving shots from teammates in front of net, on Wednesday, 18, 2012.
The practice session is said to be the maximum he could go as far as improvement in his condition is concerned and if he is unable to return sooner or his team is out of the quarterfinals series it will be all done for him with regard to his participation
in the current NHL playoffs.
Vokoun said of his injury:
“The explanation from the doctor to me was that it’s like a concussion. Somebody heals in months, somebody else [sooner], it all depends on how your body is reacting so you can’t predict. It’s not like saying ‘its two weeks and you’ll be fine.’”
He added:
“It’s when you feel good-that’s when you’re fine. That means you have to go through a full practice and do everything like in a game situation and I haven’t done anything close to that.”
Furthermore, his present contract is going to run out on July 01, 2012, making him an unrestricted free agent, unless he wins a new deal from the team.
Given the situation that the player is going through at the moment, some commentators are not as optimistic about his chances of being retained on fresh terms, as he himself might be hoping for.
The player admitted that it was the most disappointing time of his career as the playoffs is the time when all players want to be a part of the game, while he has to sit out as a silent spectator.
Vokoun said:
“It’s very hard. Obviously you play whole year and go through up and downs. This is the fun time and this is when you want to play.”
The next few days are going to be crucial and will determine his chances for return.
