Groin injury rules Welegedara out of second Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 – Cricket News Update
Sri Lankan fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/UWMBCA-Welegedara-c2735, has been ruled out of the second and final Test of the two-match series due to a groin injury. The 25-year-old right-arm medium-pacer Shaminda Eranga has been called into the squad as Welegedara’s replacement.
Sri Lanka's chief selector Ashantha de Mel told the media reporters that the left-arm seamer was facing some difficulty in bowling during the opening Test in Galle. MRI scans after that confirmed it was a groin strain, sidelining the fast bowler for the
second Test.
"Welegedara bowled with some discomfort during the Galle Test and an MRI scan revealed that he had a groin strain," Ashantha de Mel, Sri Lanka's chief selector said.
Though Eranga has been named as a replacement for Welegedara, he is unlikely to make the playing XI at Colombo as the SLC chief selector has hinted that Dhammika Prasad is likely to share the new ball with Suranga Lakmal.
Good news for the Sri Lankan fans from Colombo is that injured all-rounder Angelo Mathews will be returning to the squad for the second Test, though as a specialist batsman only.
This was confirmed by Sri Lanka's chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashantha-Lakdasa-Francis-de-Mel-c46253.
"Mathews has been declared fit and we have brought him in, but he will only bat," de Mel had said in a statement on Saturday.
Mathews has been battling a calf injury and had failed a fitness test ahead of the series opener in Galle last week. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LPC-Silva-c1848, who had been included into the opening Test squad as an injury cover for Mathews, will make way for the latter.
The second Test begins at the P Sara Oval Stadium, Colombo on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. The first Test between the two outfits at Galle was won by the hosts by 75 runs. Sri Lanka needs to only draw the Colombo Test to win their first Test series since magical
spinner Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement in July 2010.
