Question:

Groom's cake question?

My fiance and I were going to have a cheesecake with our actual wedding cake just to have something different than other weddings, but decided not to because it has to be kept cool and is just a pain and we don't want to have to worry about it, so we have decided to maybe just add a groom's cake with our wedding cake...have any of you done this? How does it work...what I mean is, is the cake only for my fiance and his groomsmen/ushers? Where do you keep the cake? (on the head table, etc.?) and I was planning on doing some kind of hunting theme because my fiance is a big duck hunter. If any of you have any suggestions if you could please let me know?

Also, websites with any good ideas....anything advice is appreciated!

  1. We had a grooms cake at our wedding. Google unique grooms cakes or Duck hunting grooms cakes and you should be able to find several cute designs.

I put the grooms cake on a smaller table by itself not far from the wedding cake. I also got a different flavor than the wedding cake just for a variety

  2. No, the groom's cake is for everyone, just like the wedding cake. It's called a groom's cake because it is often shaped to represent the groom's interest (perhaps a guitar if he is a musician, or iced in the colors of his favorite sports team), while the regular wedding cake is more likely to be chosen by the bride (and it's white, like most gowns!). It doesn't mean that only the groom gets to eat it.

Many couples get the groom's cake in a different flavor than the wedding cake (chocolate, or with fruit in between the layers, etc), so that guests have a choice.

This site will tell you all about the history of the groom's cake, and has some images that might inspire you:

You can have it on the table with your wedding cake if you want it in all the cake photos, or you can have it on a small separate table next to the wedding cake.

  3. Most of the weddings I have gone to the grooms cake is a different flavor. like chocolate.  I'm sure something masculine can be created, or a cake shaped like a duck.

  6. We had a groom's cake.  It was really just a regular cake, but a chocolate one.  Chocolate is harder to do when you are making a big cake because of the weight.  People could choose what they wanted (until that one was gone!).  We didn't limit who could eat the cake.  I like the idea of putting a little whimsy on it though.  We put the groom's cake right next to the wedding cake. Same table, etc.

  7. There are no steadfast rules as far as groom's cakes go.  Traditionally they are chocolate, but they are generally made in the groom's favorite cake flavor.  If he is into duck hunting, then you could make the cake themed that way by having the bakery design the cake to reflect that.  My fiance works for the state beverage control board, so I'm going to have a cake shaped like a liquor bottle.  Anyone who wants a piece can have one.  It doesn't have to be served at the rehearsal dinner either.  You can serve it at the reception if you like.  In fact, all of the weddings I have been to served it at the reception and I plan to as well.

  8. the grooms cake is for the rehearsal dinner, not for the wedding
