  1. It really depends on the breed of the horse and the class/discipline you are showing in. For instance - I have Morgans, and I show Western pleasure, hunter under saddle, and driving - we NEVER cut our horse's tails. The goal is to have the tail as long as it possible can be without interfering with the horse's movement.

If you are going to an open show that has a lot of different breeds showing together, you can use your own personal preference and see what other are doing in your area.

There are manuals governing all breed and "A" rated shows that tell you what type of grooming standards is allowed - consult with the show regulations for your breed or discipline.

  2. Yes, both AQHA western and english horses have tail enhancements and their horse's tails are banged straight across.

  3. I only dealt with NFQHA or open classes.

One thing I absolutely love about the NFQHA...the horse MUST be shown 'natural'.  No trimming of hair inside ears, no clipping to 'improve' conformation.  *I've seen fetlock hair cut 'just so' to make the angles look different than they actually are*

Anyways...in NFQHA, absolutely NO silver or bling on riders.  Attire is jeans, boots, western shirt, and hat.  Serviceable tack with NO silver.  Horse can have a beard, whiskers, long ear hair...you name it.  ONLY judged on performance of horse.  That's what's fair.  So, that one-eyed, lop eared, half a mane missing, and a rat tail...can place first over a perfectly groomed horse that can't do the job.

Ha...sorry about the 'rabbit trail'...I know both disciplines do it...but I prefer the natural look.

  4. it is more popular in engish, but yes, it is done in both. in western, though, you want the tail to be long (about mid-pastern) and if you bang it, it takes away from the ideal look. but the very end of the tail is cut just a bit to get rid of the 'frayed' look, but its not necessarily banged. in english, mostly jumper-type horses, some people bang their tails at about mid-cannon. most big-time western showmen do not bang the tail; most of the western people who bang the tail really dont know any better, or also do jumpers.

  5. I suppose it depends on the discipline, but yes I've seen it in both english and western disciplines. I'm not much for it myself, but it does have a 'cleaner' look.

Yay eqquus! Aren't you happy your question was finally posted?!
