Define the terms origin and insertion of a muscles? How does these terms compare with the terms proximal attachment and distal attachment?

  1. the attachment that moves the least is the origin and the one that moves the most is the insertion.

    However, under changing circumstances the degree of mobility of the attachments may be reversed, therefore the terms origin and insertion are interchangeable


  2. The more proximal part of a muscle is often referred to as the origin while the more distal attachment is usually termed the insertion. In essence, proximal attachment is the same as origin, distal attachment is the same insertion.
