Question:

Ground training for 1 1/2 yr Filly...?

I have a 1 1/2 yr quarter horse filly. I got her about a month ago and she was just halter broke. couldn't even get your hand anywhere near her legs or she would freak, she hated everyone but me... Now I can rub all over her, She is getting used to my mom.

I am wanting some training tips and/or excersizes that will be help us out further down the road when we break her.

She is very smart and a super fast learner.

She is bombproof other then when strange people are around... but we are working on that.

I have put a blanket on her and she never even flinched. She leads with the blanked on and also lunges with it on. with out a halter on she backs, stops, turns and follows me everywhere.

Today we put roping reins on her halter and we were walking beside her getting used to us neck reining her. She would turn with out any pressure at all.

She is doing ok with her baths.

I can pick up all of her feet.

I even put her to the test the other day to see what she would spook at..cont.

  1. Sounds like you are doing great.  You will become good friends and she will trust you, so appreciate what you are doing.  Change things up, don't let her get bored.

What you teach her depends on what you want out of her.

Swimming is great for yearlings and two year olds but you need to know what you are doing. There may be a farm near you that offers swimming.   Swimming is great exercise if you want her to look toned with little stress on her bones that are not matured as of yet.

I have swam hundreds of horses and they all liked it after they tried it a couple of times but I live in Louisiana and we get really hot down here.

    Keep up the good work.

She depends on you so don't let her down.

  2. basically do lots of different, weird things with her. We have 2 year old colt that we can do pretty much anything to cause he is used to us doing weird and wonderful things with him - it makes them so much easier when it comes time for the vet etc.

We can quite literally wrap our arms around his head and he just cuddles back. He is used to cars and I can sit in the back of our truck and lead him while someone else drives (I broke both ankles and when my mom and I were turning out it was the only way to get to the field cause my mom can't walk very far).

We're also quite firm with him - he has to respect our space and if we want to do something with him he doesn't have a choice - I don't mean we get rough, we are just quietly insistant - basically we calmly go about doing what is needed and he calms down and lets us - this is very useful for wound treatment etc. He's used to having rugs just chucked over him - very good for if someone else is doing him.

After I broke my ankles I was in a wheelchair for a while but within a few days he was used to me wheeling under his neck, rugging and brushing from the wheelchair as well as picking up feet etc.

To be honest it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with her and she's turning into a good unflappable young horse.

One thing I've found good is using a mounting block of some sort to get over the youngster and lean over their back. We've done this for a few months and the other day I legged my sister up so she was lying on his back and he really couldn't care so she swang her leg over and laid on his neck for a few seconds then jumped down and he wasn't bothered at all. He won't have much more done cause he's too young but this regularily will be a good basis when it comes time to back him properly. We've also bitted and saddled him as well as started long reining with him so he gets the idea about rein aids and leg aids (using a hand on his side).

Basically I would keep going as you are. But I would also start getting her used to having her feet trimmed and it would be worth having her checked by a dentist reasonably soon as she will be teething soon and it's important to have her teeth checked regularily while she is teething.

  3. shes cute =]

    flyspray,

    blakets,

    feet cleaned

    going threw water

    over boards

    loud noises

objects that would normal e threatening.

    dogs around,

    cars

    walk by the road.

start a motercylce or other vehicel in front of him so he can get used to the sound.

    loading.

    saddle

    briddle

    (no riding of course)

standing square(if u plan to show)

    leading correctly.

well tht will give you a pretty well broke horse if

you do all that. if u have any ???'s just message me

  4. get her used to a saddle and cinch/girth. and saddle pads.

put a bit  in her mouth.

longe her with a saddle on her back, or fully tacked.  but not all at once lol.

    hope i helped(:

  5. I don't have a specific answer but you may want to check out Clinton Anderson's website... Downunder Horsemanship , Chris Cox is also a really good horse trainer and of course you can check out the Parelli website for more tips and suggestions.  Good luck..she's beautiful.

  6. try going through muddy water some horses dont like it cause they cant see that sets off some of the horses that i ride then its rodeo time

  7. Have you trained horses before? Cuz it sounds like your doing everything right!!! Your filly is beautiful BTW!!!

You might want to try some trick training with her. Having her retrieve things, lay down, smile, stuff like that. You can get books on Trick Training. It would be fun for you and her!

  8. get her used to strange sounds. take a hair dryer and blow it all over her when she gets used to the smell and sound, next really get her used to clippers in her ears and around her face. this will help a lot in the long run if you show her since she is so pretty. also try teaching her to pivot on her hind quarters. if you want her to build up lots of butt muscles and legs do rollbacks in the round pen(when you turn her make her push off hard with her hind legs, only takes 5 minutes and they'll be tuckered out. also do lots of backing up.

by the way i absolutely love buckskins, she is going to be gorgeous!!!!! you should really consider showing her b/c you don't really see a lot of buckskins in the show ring, you'll stand out     :-)

  9. For 1 1/2 and you've only had her a month, WOW!

Great progress!  She has a wonderful mind to work with.

My guys had issues with bicycles and Little Tyke toys in yards and Real Estate signs.

Cans in a bag and shaken/drug

I did alot of tossing paperbag balls and plastic bags.

Tarps was huge on my list for the yearlings.

Disengaging the hindend and shoulder over exercises was top of the list though for my yearlings.

    Honking horns

    ATVs

You may want to see about ponying her along.

I, myself am not qualified to do that and my horses are not pony safe (wish they were though!) but it is something that will help her along!

I am really jealous of you!  My filly is still a mental wreck and I've had her since February....still has panic attacks when putting on her fly mask or when the farrier comes.  Flighty!

    I'll trade ya!

    haha

  10. take as much time as u need. i dont know much bout horse braking and training though.

but i have to congradulate u on finding such a gorgous filly. wen she grows up no matter how u train her (as long as ur self or no one abuses her <<< not ment to be hurt full) she is goin to be magnifisent horse and if u cant ride her in the long run u will get ALOT i mean ALOT of money from broodmaring her if she does safe births and stuff

good luck with the training and be patient sounds like u and her have a great conection together
