Question:

Groundhog and a mole?

This is the second year that Mr. Groundhog came to visit. Last year he burrowed under my porch and now this year under my shed. I know they can burrow up tp 50ft but is this near the surface? I have tunnels that seam to be a mole but after researching groundhogs I am not sure. The groundhog doesn't bother me (or my dog) but I need to get rid of him if he's the one making trails in my yard. Has anyone had experience this?

  1. Moles and voles usually travel closer to the surface. there only about twice the size of a mouse. I have actually watched the ground move when a mole is traveling. Groundhogs dig big holes because they are big critters. They usually have 3 to five large hole per burrow to allow for escape routes. These holes will be large enough to step in and possibly break an ankle. Ground moles can do nothing in comparison to that. They do dig long small tunnels close to the surface though and can certainly s***w up a nice lawn. If it is small trails it is likely moles. They average 3 to 5 per acre. I found an interesting article on getting rid of moles. I have a few groundhogs around here and I really do not notice them. I don't have a garden though. lol   Here is the article..  http://en.allexperts.com/q/Pests-730/gro...

  2. Groundhogs don't tunnel too close to the surface - it's rather deep. They burrow down to their den - add a room for a toilet away from the bedding den, and will dig homes for each baby too when it matures.

They eat your hostas! among other plants as it did with mine.  The only thing that sent him on his way was my cat and the neighbors parking in front of my house to watch him when he was out.

I fed him fruit, bread, and veggie scraps all the time - just to stop the plant eating.  He was quite entertaining for 2 yrs.

The Moles are probably the mess makers.

  3. to get rid of the moles, you need to first get rid of grubs. the moles are most likely in your yard because you have grubs and the eat on the grubs. the first thing you want to do to get rid of the moles is to get rid of the grubs. You can buy a product such as grub ex @ lowes or your local garden/home improvement place to help with the grubs. you may also want a mole killer too, but getting rid of the grubs is what you are going to want to do first
