Question:

Group B Strep, almost 37 weeks pregnant?

I had a Group B Strep test done last Thursday. It came back positive. The doctors nurse called me and told me that it is common, and that what they will do is give me IV Antibiotics when I go to the hospital in labor. Okay, my concern is that I live almost an hour away from the hospital. My fiance works 30 minutes in the opposite direction. So that is already 11/2 hours from when labor starts until I can get to the hospital. What if my baby comes quick (this is my 2nd child, the 1st I didn't have this problem) and I don't make it in time to get the IV Antibiotics? What are the chances of my baby getting Group B Strep? My doctor will do an elective induction at 39 weeks. Do you think due to this problem, he would consider it a little earlier just incase? My daughter was born at 38 weeks, and this baby feels like he'll come any day! I'll be 37 weeks on Friday.

  1. I had Group B Strep with my first. I live about 45 minutes from the hospital and did not make it there in time to get the IV. I only had time to change into my hospital clothes and my blood pressure checked. They just made us stay at the hospital an extra day to keep an eye on her.

  2. I tested the same way last week and for the first time during this whole thing (this is my first child) I was scared and upset.

I looked it up online and found a number of stats that said basically, UNTREATED, there is a one in 10,000 chance of passing it on.

If you do have the baby before they can give you something for it, they will simply keep you for at least 48 hours and make sure that the baby is alright. They can also administer something to the baby once born.

So basically, even if they can't give you the antibiotics in time, there is still a small chance of passing it on, and you should be alright either letting things progress naturally, or do your elective induction.

Of course, as you said you would, still talk to your doctor and find out what he/she suggests, as this is a very common thing to test positive for and he/she should be able to set your mind at ease. My opinion, after freaking out over it myself, is that the chances of passing it on are slim, and hopefully there is enough time to get the antibiotics so there is even less worry for you to deal with.

    Good luck :)

  3. I had group B strep with my 1st and was in labor for 22 hrs, with my 2nd child I did not have it, however labor lasted less than 3 hours, I almost didn't make it to the hospital! Ive been told that the more babies you have, the shorter the labor will be!

  4. hmm they usually give you a prescription for antibiotics before the baby is born. Tell him/her that your worried and see what he suggest.
