Group Lotus’ appeal against Team Lotus rejected – Formula 1 news
Recent reports have revealed that the appeal Group Lotus made against Team Lotus has been rejected which means that Team Lotus can use the name Lotus in Formula 1 legally.
“Despite the detailed judgment there are issues which still require clarification and we remain committed to obtaining this much needed clarity for the many fans of the Lotus marque - we are extremely grateful for their continued support. The decision to
appeal has not been taken lightly,” said Sarah Price, Head of Legal, Group Lotus.
Lotus Renault GP are backed by Group Lotus who claim that they have the rights to use the name Lotus.
However, it has not been proved officially yet and the court has decided to reject Group Lotus’ appeal.
According to the decision of the court back in May 2011, Justice Peter Smith gave his verdict about this case declaring Team Lotus as the rightful owners of the name while Group Lotus has the sole right to use the name in the sport if they wish to.
As a result of this decision, both of the teams did not have any sort of problem with this decision including Group Louts until a couple of weeks ago when Group Lotus announced its intention of making an appeal against Team Lotus once again.
The rejection of this appeal was more like a victory for Team Lotus after which the team boss Tony Fernandes wrote on his Twitter page that it was a “great day for the team.”
“Great day for Team Lotus in court. Interim costs awarded to us. Application for permission to appeal by Group Lotus rejected by Justice Smith,” Fernandes said.
This means that Team Lotus still holds the right to the name Lotus but since both of the teams are using the name for their respective teams, this decision would not create any sort of problem whatsoever.
