I am in TN, a state that requires at least two people to form a group for health insurance. I have a group policy through my company. Our two employees quit and my two partners are wanting out. If I continue to operate the comany as a single individual will I lose my eligibility for an insurance group or can I keep it alive as a single member?

  1. If TN requires two people for group health as you say, it sounds like you may have to recruit another person into your ins. plan.  If in doubt, call your insurance co.

  2. You will probably lose your eligibility if you drop to only one person. However, many insurers will let this slide until renewal rather than cancel you mid year.

Note that some insurers and some states will allow one person to be covered, if you can show that you have 2 employees and one is waiving for another group plan (spouse coverage).

If you lose your group plan, you can still qualify for a HIPPA plan, regardless of medical conditions. Contact an agent about this.

  3. You will be able to keep the coverage until your renewal. When you renewal comes they will know that you don't have a "group" and they will cancel coverage.
