Groupe Edmond de Rothschild slips one place down in 2011 Extreme Sailing Series standings
After the finish of penultimate regatta of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Circuit, France’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild skippered by Pierre Peenec finished fifth in the regatta standings. However, due to this low score, the French team has compromised their
top position in the circuit standings and has toppled down at second place behind Luna Rossa.
Despite the loss of top position, French team skipper, Pennec is not worried at all. He believes that the result does not matter before they race in the final regatta of the season. Pennec’s team has only a one point deficit as compared to Luna Rossa, the
winners of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 8 in Almeria, and they are looking forward to the ultimate regatta of the circuit.
Pennec expressed his thoughts and said, “Whether we have a one point deficit in relation to Luna Rossa or a one point lead, it doesn’t make any difference to us. The title will once again be decided on the final leg and most likely the closing race.”
The French team skipper added, “We’re going to have to make sure we’re ahead whatever happens. We’re a lot better as the outsider rather than the favourite and it’s a very good thing to arrive in Singapore without any pressure.”
Overall standings of Extreme Sailing Series after eight acts:
1. Luna Rossa (ITA) Max Sirena, Paul Campbell-James, Alister Richardson, Manuel Modena = 69 points
2. Edmond de Rothschild Group (FRA) Pierre Pennec, Christophe Espagnon, Thierry Fouchier, Hervé Cunningham = 68 points
3. Emirates Team New Zealand (NZ) Adam Beashel, Ray Davies, Jeremy Lomas, Derek Seward = 60 points
4. Alinghi (SUI) Tanguy Cariou, Yann Guichard, Nils Frei, Yves Detrey = 59 points
5. The Wave, Muscat (OMA) Leigh McMillan, Kyle Langford, Nick Hutton, Khamis Al Anbouri = 57 points
6. Red Bull Extreme Sailing (AUT) Roman Hagara, Hans Peter Steinacher, Matt Adams, Craig Monk = 53 points
7. Artemis Racing (SWE) Terry Hutchinson, Sean Clarkson, Rodney Ardern, Julien Cressant = 48 points
8. Oman Air (OMA) Ben Ainslie, Kinley Fowler, David Carr, Nasser Al Mashari = 47 points
9. Team GAC Pindar (GBR) Ian Williams, Mischa Heemrskerk, Andrew Walsh, Brad Webb = 30 points
10. Niceforyou (ITA) Alberto Barovier, Stefano Rizzi, Daniele De Luca, Simone de Mari = 17 points
11. Team Extreme (EUR) Roland Gaebler, Nahid Gaebler, Antón Paz, Tom Buggy = 17 points
As far as the overall regatta victories are concerned, the French Extreme 40 team has clinched two regattas at Muscat and Nice respectively, while they have been in the top three podiums in five regattas. They have a good track record and have the potential
to snatch back the lead.
Meanwhile, Luna Rossa skipper, Max Sirena is also ready to take on the challenge in the final regatta. Emirates Team New Zealand, the third podium holders in the circuit result board could have been in a strong position now, had their boat not been damaged
during the event at Almeria port.
