Groupie Doll could face boys in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct
Trainer Buff Bradley, who co-owns the 4-year-old filly, Groupie Doll, with his father, Fred, and Carl Hurst and Brent Burns, is leaning over the idea of running the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner against the boys in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct Racetrack on 24 November, 2012.
After her Breeders’ Cup triumph, at Santa Anita Park over seven furlongs against a bunch of super sprinters from different parts of the world, Groupie Doll was scheduled to go to trainer Buff Bradley’s farm, but plans changed and now she is in contention to run in the most prestigious mile long race.
The 4-year-old filly is currently stationed at Churchill Downs, and the reason for her to run against males is that Bradley believes she in the form of her life, and he might fancy winning the race with such a good filly at his disposal.
"She's so good right now," Bradley said. "It wouldn't be an easy race, but with as good as she is right now, we're thinking about it."
Groupie Doll running in the Cigar Mile could be of the fact that she was scheduled to return to base after a brief stop at Louisville after the Breeders’ Cup, but Bradley wanted her to participate in the Breeders’ Cup Parade of Champions on 11 November.
"When we took her over for the parade she was dragging them around," Bradley said.
Though, Groupie Doll’s participation in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile could be subject to what sort of weights she is assigned for the Aqueduct event, and that could end up as the deciding factor, as weights will be announced on 18 November.
"We'll check the weights and see," Bradley said. "I want to make sure the weights are fair and, if they look all right, we'll probably go."
The daughter of Bowman’s Band has been in emphatic form this season, and has strung together a winning streak of five races on the trot. Including the Grade 1 Madison Stakes, Grade 1 Humana Distaff, Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters, Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America, and now the Grade 1 Filly and Mare Sprint.
