Groupie Doll to miss both Sugar Swirl and South Beach says Buff Bradley
The 3-year-old Brant Laue owned and Buff Bradley trained filly, Groupie Doll, is currently pointed toward the six furlong long Sugar Swirl Stakes and the seven and a half furlong long South Beach on the weekend. Both races are run over turf but trainer Buff
Bradley isn’t enticed by either of these races.
Groupie Doll turned in a work of five furlongs in 59 seconds under exercise rider Jose Garcia. “I might enter her for dirt only in the South Beach, but she definitely won’t go in the Sugar Swirl,” Bradley said. “She’s ready now, but we’re not going to run
her three-quarters. I’ll probably just wait and go into an allowance race with her next week, and Calvin Borel will be here to ride her.”
The 3-year-old daughter of Bowman’s Band, Groupie Doll is coming off a seventh place finish in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes on turf at Churchill Downs on 12 November, 2011, at about 1 1/16 miles.
The longest Groupie Doll has gone in terms of distance was when she won the Grade 3 Gardenia Stakes at about a mile, but this time Buff Bradley entered her in a race which was a little longer than a mile and it seems she couldn’t cope with it at all.
The distance could be one reason for Groupie Doll’s uncharacteristic seventh place finish in the Grade 3 Mrs. Revere Stakes, but also the caste the race had reeled in was capable of overwhelming any classy filly.
The likes of Bizzy Caroline and Hungry Island were among eleven contenders which made the race ever so difficult. Marketing Mix finished on top of the pile on the day as she defeated Bizzy Caroline in second and Hungry Island in third with the winning time
of 1 minute and 42.59 seconds.
Groupie Doll turned in two back to back second placed finishes prior to the Mrs. Revere. She finished second in the Charles Town Oaks at Charles Town on 17 September, and then went on to finish second to winner Great Hot in the Grade 2 Raven Run over poly
track, both races were run over a distance of seven furlongs.
