Groupie Doll works half mile at Churchill Downs, Cigar still on the cards
Groupie Doll, a 4-year-old filly by Bowman’s Band is getting ready for a possible start against the boys for the first time in her career in the Grade 1, $350,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct Racetrack on 24 November, 2012, as she breezed half-mile on her own,
and clocked the distance in 48 1/5 seconds at Churchill Downs on 17 November.
Groupie Doll, who campaigns for Buff Bradley, Fred Bradley, Carl Hurst and Brent Burns, went out on the Churchill Downs dirt track right after the renovation break under jockey John McKee, and downed the first quarter mile in 24 3/5 seconds, and then galloped
out five furlongs in 1 minute and 1 2/5 seconds.
"We'll see how she comes back and then probably make a decision (Sunday)," trainer Buff Bradley said. "I'm sure the weights will be fair, so I'm thinking that mostly we got this work into her to see that she still wants to do it. I want to wait and see what
tomorrow brings. I want to see her tomorrow and see how she comes back."
Out of Silver Deputy mare Deputy Doll, Groupie Doll is currently exiting a brilliant victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at about seven furlongs at Santa Anita Park.
Trained Buff Bradley is taking a chance against the males, because he feels that the good run of form the filly is in, is the best time to face a bigger challenge, and what could be bigger that grade 1 male company.
And of course, not to mention, her current five graded stakes streak, which includes three grade 1 victories and two grade 2 wins.
Groupie Doll’s five race streak started at Keeneland, when she won the Grade 1 Madison Stakes over the synthetic surface, and then went on to win the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs also at the same distance.
Then at Presque Isle Downs, she went on to win the 6 ½ furlong long Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters, and then back at Keeneland it was 6 furlong sprint, Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America, finally winning her fifth on the trot, the Filly and Mare Sprint.
