I have a taste for ginger root and I use it alot in cooking and sometimes - I just like chewing on a piece. I love growing my own veg and have since wondered if you can grow your own ginger root?

They seem to be very common with most of my local stores selling them. I've had a look myself but no results...

  1. You can grow your own ginger quite easily. Whether or not it will survive the winter outside where you live will be the question to answer. Ginger is grown by rhizome, that's the root part that you eat. If you take a medium sized piece of ginger, lay it in a pot sideways, press it into the soil and lightly cover it, not too much soil, keep it moist in a sunny location, it will sprout and root. When you think your plant is big enough to be trimmed, cut out some of the rhizome and eat it as you would eat a piece from the store. Easy

  2. Here, this website is quite informative...

  3. Rosepetal seems to have given the correct answer. I did this myself several years ago and it worked. You must keep the plant in a frost free place overwinter and do not allow it to become waterlogged.

  4. Try growing some ginseng as well, it's not that common and it's a bit difficult growing a grade A, but it's very beneficial for your health.
