Question:

Growing Lemons and Limes?

I want to grow lemons and limes (Indoors is fine, we live in a condo and have a very small yard.. plus it freezes in the winter here).. Is there anything I need to know? Key limes are fine but I'd prefer regular limes... Do I buy seeds somewhere or small plants from a nursery? I don't think I've ever seen either.. Does anyone know where I can get them in Ontario? (London to be exact)... and how to take care of them? Also, how long before they are actually producing fruit?

  1. Four winds are the people for citrus for sure!! I would suggest getting dwarf varieties. they can go outside in the summer and be moved indoors for cold weather. Hard frosts are MURDER on citrus! If you keep them indoors year round you will need to hand pollinate to get fruit. Most of the plants you get from Four Winds will be fruiting size. Basic care of citrus IS pretty simple, warmth, good light and well draining soil with a regular feeding schedule. Check your local laws about the importation of plants so as to avoid unnecesary costs and delays.

  2. This website is phenomenal, even though it is not Canadian:

It is without a doubt the best citrus retailer for the home grower in North America.  Even if you decide to buy from someplace else, the info here is great.

Depending on the variety you get, it will determine the length of time before you are enjoying the fruits of your labor.

As for care, they are very  easy.  You want to make sure they are in a sunny window or a sun-room / heated greenhouse.  Other than to make sure that they are watered and have a bit of fertilizer, they are good to go!
