I really want to grow some strawberries in my backyard.

But I need some information first. I dont really know anything about growing fruit.

Whats the best time for growing them.

What weather is best, I live in New York.

Do they need a lot of sun or more shade?

Anything elsey ou think I should know, please say.

Thanks!

  1. Strawberries are hard to maintain atleast in the state of Ohio.  But here are some suggestions.  The best time to grow is in late April or early May. You should keep them dry as possible so they don't get flooded out.  Strawberries really don't need sun, the sun won't hurt them.  Water the strawberries once a day but do NOT saturate the ground.  When the strawberries get to a nice size they are really to be picked.  Wash them up and ENJOY!!!!

  2. Strawberries and New York.  Hmmmmm.  You may be too far north for good results, but with care and attention, you may have success.

Your extension agent will give you info about kinds of strawgberries that do well in your area.

Plant in early spring.  You pinch off that first year's blossoms so that the plant gets established without fruiting.  Second year in the ground you will get fruit.

You will also get suckers that are daughter plants off the main one.  Cut off all but 2 of those blighters and make sure that the daughters are situated in good areas, not all crowded into one bit of soil.  They can be moved.  Or after the daughters are established in the next spring, they can be transplanted to another strawberry bed, or given to friends.

Slugs will be a difficult problem.  If you are organic like me, saucers of beer will attract the guys and they will have a 'happy' ending.  Mulch the beds with straw for clean berries at harvest time.
