Growing family....should we buy a car or SUV?

Hello, my boyfriend and I are expecting our first baby and do not currently have a vehicle. since we are looking to buy one soon and we differ on thoughts i would appreciate some advice.

here's what you would need to know: first of all we have a 70 lb pitbull girl who is our "first baby". she's a big girl so needless to say would need her own space for when we travel. she has her own luggage for her bowls, toys, food, medicine etc.

although i'm a first time parent i know babies come with luggage too. diaper bag, clothes bag, stroller, etc.

all this PLUS our stuff too! he says a car like a honda accord would be just fine but i'd rather have the extra space, comfort and safety of an suv, like an isuzu trooper.

my question is : who's right? will a car do or is an suv best for a growing family? thanx in advance....

  1. get the toyota

  2. Buy a Volvo estate car, plenty of room in that for your dog

and baby stuff. The only problem with that is it means you

are a Volvo owner and everyone will hate you like everyone

    hates BMW drivers. .

  3. A mid size sedan does everything a SUV does. Unless you're going fourwheeling with it forget the stupid SUV.

You're extra space means extra weight, which means a bigger displacement engine, your vehicle will weigh more, and you will eat more gas. A SUV handles terribly also, if you have to swerve while on the highway you are at a far greater roll-over risk. The Honda Accord is going to handle like a fighter jet compared to the clumsy SUV, which means safety. And fun. Crash test ratings between an SUV and sedan all depend on the manufactuer. I've always picked German/European cars-not cost-effective ones like Hyundai and Kia.

SUV's don't have trunks, since they're technically hatchbacks look at the trunk in the VW passat, it's HUGE.

  4. The Car is definitely a safer vehicle than an SUV.

But you might consider a Minivan,

    1. All the space of a gas guzzling SUV.

    2. Nearly  the the same fuel economy as a car.

    3. Insurance costs comparable to a family sedan.

    4. Much lower risk of Rollover than an SUV.

    5. Not as likely to be stolen or vandalized.

    6. Better handling than an SUV comparable to an automobile.

SUV's are generally not safer than a family car, in fact it's quite the opposite. With the exception of a few SUV's like the Lexus and Mercedes SUV's which are actually built on a car chassis with a lower center of gravity, Almost any family car is going to have a higher safety and survivability rating than almost any SUV will. Most SUV's are built on a Pickup truck chassis with a higher center of gravity, hence the roll over problem.

If it's really just a matter of looking cool and keeping up with the Joneses next door then I guess you'll need the SUV.

With fuel prices these days, a minivan can be an excellent choice giving you the fineset features of both.

If safety and survivability in an accident is truly your main concern then a sedan is the safest choice.
