Question:

Grunting/Grinding Sound when slowing down?

I've got a 98 explorer and when I slow down to about 20 or lower and am still applying the breaks, my car makes a low grunt like grinding noise. Its only when I get below about 20 mph and stops when I let off the breaks. I have heard no squealing from my breaks. My transmission was replaced about 12k miles ago if it might be related.

I have been meaning to go to a mechanic but I just keep forgetting and would like some possible heads up for when I do get it checked out.

Thanks.

  1. Brake pads, maybe rotors too

  2. Brake pads are gone. The old pads are probably rubbing up against the rotor or it is steel to steel on the calipers (pad part gone). I would guess you will have a little vibration goin on also when slowling applying the brakes.

    Good Luck!!!

  3. Is either a brake pads, or shoes worn down, and or some bearings going bad, no lube on them.  Or something in the driveshafts bad.

  4. you forget to go to mechanic??? don't u hear the grinding/grunting every time u drive?????  not tranny...lets figger it out...you step on brakes...it makes noise,,,you let off brakes it stops...hmmm what could it be???? maybe the freaking brakes..

  5. Get your brakes pads/shoes/rotors checked, also get the mechanic to check your wheel bearings as that could also be the issue.
