Everyone in the NFL will wear it this season on their left shoulder pad. It stands for the Players Association leader of 25 years, Gene Upshaw, who has done as much for modern football, and particularly player compensation, as anyone in the game.  Madden had a nice tribute to Gene (who just passed recently) at the start of tonight's game. They started in the league the same year - I believe 67 - as fellow linemen and teammates for the Raiders.  He has tremendous admiration for him, as a teammate, Hall of Fame player, personal friend and union leader.  His wife flipped the coin to start the game. It's a fitting tribute.
