Guan Tianlang is now the youngest golf player
Guan Tianlang is about to make a new world record, of being the youngest player ever to perform on the European Tour staged event.
The 13-year-old junior champion is in the field of the Volvo China Open, that is scheduled from April 19 to 22, at the Binhai Lake Golf Club in Tianjin, China.
He is the youngest player ever to take part in an event organised by a mega tour. This will be his first professional event, as in the past he has mostly played the junior events.
Previously, the record belongs to the 14-year-old Jason Hak Shun-yat, who played the UBS Hong Kong Open in 2008. Now, the record is about to be changed in 2012 and Tianlang will become the youngest player.
Tianlang is also striving hard to be a part of the Australian Open and the Australian Masters. However, he has to pass the qualifying round first and is still waiting for it.
He was aiming to be in the field of a professional event, therefore played the Volvo China Open qualifying round about three weeks back. The youngster finished the tournament on the fourth position and got selected for the 156-man field.
Tianlang was selected for the field, but was also waiting for the final approval from the tournament officials. Yesterday, the exempted list was released and Tianlang was confirmed a spot in the RMB 20,000,000 tournament.
"I'm so excited right now," said Tianlang. "I was disappointed to lose out in the play-off and I thought I'd blown a great chance to make history, but then to find out I'm actually going to play is like a dream come true"
He added, "My goal now is to be the youngest player ever to make the cut in a European Tour event, and if I can shoot level par or better I'll have a good chance to do that".
Besides involvement in the leading sports, Tianlang is also a bright student. He is delivering his best at school and at the golf courses as well.
He is likely to get huge attention and coverage from the media, as expressed by the Alistair Polson, the Volvo China Open Operations Director.
"Being a local player I expect he will receive a lot of media attention so I hope he does well," Polson said.
The tournament is gaining huge popularity for the exciting field and for having a new lad in the field. All the players are arriving in the industrial center of northeastern China, Tianjin.
