Guan Tianlang misses the cut at the Volvo China Open, fails to become the youngest cut-maker
Guan Tianlang was unable to make the cut in the second round of the Volvo China Open, meanwhile, he also missed the chance to become the youngest cut-maker.
The 13-year-old Chinese junior amateur golf player was giving his debut performance at the European Tour and the OneAsia Tour co-sanctioned event.
On Thursday, he created a record for being the youngest player to tee off at a professional event. However, he faced several difficulties while scoring and ended up missing the cut after playing the second round.
He failed to make another record, as he scored a 5-over 77 in the first round. He carded four unimpressive bogeys and a double-bogey as well. He was in the danger zone at the end of the day.
He teed off the second round early in the morning. He again displayed a mediocre performance and started the round by carding a double-bogey on the very first hole.
Later on, he shot seven more bogeys and scored only two birdies by the end of the day. He finished the round 7-over 79 and was unable to make the cut in the $3 million event. His final score was 12-over 156.
Previously, the youngest player's record was with the 14-year-old Jason Hak Shun-yat, who played the UBS Hong Kong Open in 2008. Now, Guan is the proud youngest player to play a professional event.
Observers said that making a record is impressive, however, there was also a chance for him to become the youngest cut-maker in China, but he failed.
The youngest cut-maker record belongs to Jason Hak. The 14-year-old played all the four rounds of the Hong Kong Open in 2008 and is still holding the record.
"Long term, I was the youngest player to win the China amateur championship and it would be nice to be the youngest to win the (Volvo China) Open," Guan said.
Even after missing the cut, Guan’s expectations and aims are still high. He is eyeing the upcoming mega tournament, the US Open. However, only event officials can decide whether he can play or not.
Gary Boyd and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet are currently sharing the leading position in the Volvo China Open. They scored 11-under 133 and displayed amazing performances in both the rounds.
Now all the professionals, who made the cut, will tee off the third round tomorrow. The competition is tough and spectators will be enjoying the game in China.
