Guaranteed Health Insurance for Small Business - Florida?

I just became self employed this year. I saw Florida has open enrollment for the month of August (which is almost over) for small businesses. Would I qualify for this program? All of my tax documents from last year show I was not self employed.

  1. Although the health insurance might be guaranteed, the definition of "small business" varies.  It can be anywhere from four employees insured, to less than 100 employees insured.

Even if the policy issuance is guaranteed, that doesn't mean you'll be able to afford the premiums - there's no guarantee on those, and if the group is small enough - under 10 employees insured, you can bet the policy will still be underwritten.

You're going to have to apply and find out.

  2. In the state of Florida - the August open enrollment is specifically for sole proprietors or 'groups of one". (2 or more people are required to form a group plan for every other time of year).

These plans are typically very expensive because everyone is accepted onto the plan regardless of health issues. Unless you have major health issues then it almost always makes sense to purchase a much cheaper individual health insurance plan in FL.

You typically will have to show tax documents proving that you are a legitimate business and not just a business formed solely for purpose of obtaining group health insurance.

You will want to shop around and compare quotes from at least 3 different companies. This is where an independent agent will come in handy.
