What are some places people could visit in Guatemala city???

Some things you can do are:

-Visit the Zoologico Nacional La Aurora (Nation Zoo)

-See the Edificio de Correos Central; they are cantaloupe-colored post office buildings, nice sight.

-Go horseback rising at the Academia de Equitacion El Cortijo.

-Go shopping at the Mercado Central; you can buy handicrafts and souvenirs to take back home.

-See the Torre del Reformador; it was modeled after the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

-Watch a show at the Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias - Teatro Nacional.

-Visit the Palacio Nacional, it is a museum now.

-Visit the Museo Ixchel del Traje Indigena; It is a museum of the indigenous Maya people.

-Visit Museo Popol Vuh and National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology; both museums of things relating to the Maya people.

-Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, La Merced, and Iglesia de San Francisco.

-Visit the Jardin Botanico; many tropical and native plants of Guatemala can be seen there.

-Visit the Zona Viva at night, much clubs and nightlife.

The only thing I would add is tour the Gallo (National beer) brewery.

P.S.  Don't mimic the Howler Monkey at the zoo, he will go crazy.

Adyari's answer is great... You could also see the Big Map which is a giant relief map of Guatemala.  And there are several nice malls in the city if you wanted to do some shopping.  Go to Mira Flores which is nice with two malls right next door.
